The Soweto Gospel Choir had their first ever paid performance in Frankston (not far from Melbourne) in 2003.
Since then they have toured the world, won an Emmy, two Grammys and an Oscar nomination! Their performance reflects the spirit of the ‘Rainbow Nation’, a term coined by Archishop Desmod Tutu to describe South Africa post-apartheid, combining the country’s different colours, languages and faiths.
Tenor and co-founder Shimmy Jiyane says being in back in Australia feels like coming back home.
He joins Isabelle Genoux to discuss the joy of singing and dancing and the spirit of Africa which the Soweto Gospel Choir embodies on stage
