LIVE Mandela Day Concert Coverage

Hi all,

I will be doing my best to bring ya’ll SGC related updates throughout the night (at a dinner party, so trying to do both things at the same time!)…looking forward to the concert!

Live Updates:

11:19pmET: And that’s it!  What an amazing night!!  Wished I could have been there.

11:13pmET: All the artists are coming on stage to join Stevie.  Awesome.

11:09pmET: Finale kicking it up…Stevie singing Happy Birthday To Ya … entire place is on its feet.  “Mandela is my Superking!”

11:01pmET: Choir singing Hlohonolofatsa to welcome Stevie Wonder to the stage for the Finale!!  Beautiful.  Rebecca is singing in lead and the lyrics have been changed to welcome Stevie.  Awesome!!

11:00pmET: Finale coming up…kudos being given to the houseband and the Soweto Gospel Choir.  Lots of love for the Choir!!!  Woot woot!!  The Choir is being given a standing ovation!!  Justly deserved.

10:55pmET: The Choir gets the spotlight with their beautiful rendition of This Little Light of Mine / M’Lilo Vutha Mathanjeni / If You Ever Needed The Lord with Rebecca, Lungi, Vusu and Shimmy in lead!  AWESOME!  So glad they got their chance to shine!  Such happy and beautiful music!

10:53pmET: The Choir has been released on the stage!  Standing behind Alicia and Angelique as they sing the Blessing for Africa.  Sibongile rocking it out on the mic.

10:49pmET: Alicia Keys and Angelique Kidjo!  Singing Angelique’s Blessing for Africa (Afrika).

10:36pmET: Josh Groban returns to the stage with Aretha Franklin!  You Rasied Me Up

10:29pmET: Asimbonanga done by Jesse Clegg (Johnny’s son) and Freshlyground.  The Choir is giving amazing backing…love this song.

10:27pmET: Wyclef is totally bringing down the house with his second song with Zulu.

10:19pmET: Wyclef Jean!!  Love the guy!  OMIGOD!!  The Choir is singing the African lyrics for Million Voices, a song he wrote for the movie Hotel Rwanda…and one of my fave songs!

10:12pmET: Now Thandiswa Mazwai…many will recognize her from Bongo Maffin.

10:09pmET: Loyiso on stage now…waving their hands in the air!

10:03pmET: Vusi on stage with his Sing Africa song…love his style!  Choir joins in…

9:56pmET: Josh in singing Weeping with Vusi Mahlasela and the Choir!  One of my faves!!!

9:51pmET: Josh Groban is on stage!

9:44pmET: 46664 Concert veteran Zucchero takes the stage.  Beautiful rendition of You Are So Beautiful. Bella!

9:39pmET: Baaba Maa now on stage.

9:22pmET: Queen Latifah takes the stage with the Choir.  Energy picking back up!  Great number with the Queen for her second number….soul rising!! (Sipokazi wearing a blue headwrap is totally throwing me off!  Where’s her pink??)

9:19pmET: Morgan Freeman introduces Nelson Mandela…sending a message via video from South Africa.

9:07pmET: Jesse McCartney???!!  Choir still on stage…taking advantage of their chairs!  Now they’re rocking out and dancing to Jesse’s second number Body Language.

8:59pmET: Carla Bruni and Dave Stewart’s turn.  Great rendition of Blowing in the Wind with the Choir.

8:52pmET: Kenyan Suzanna Owiyo is now taking the stage with the Choir.

8:47pmET: The Choir is now back on stage with Sipho Mabuse and his saxophone!

8:45pmET: Cyndi Lauper and Lil Kim just gave an amazing rendition of Time After Time.

8:30pmET: takes the stage…the Choir has left the stage for a break.

8:28pmET: President Obama making an appearance via video.

8:24pmET: Yvonne Chaka Chaka taking the stage now.  I love her–quite the character!  The Choir’s basses are rocking out in this song for Madiba!

8:23pmET: The hardcore Choir fan in me is kinda grrrrr that backup singers are blocking the view of the right hand side of the Choir!

8:20pmET: The Choir is having a blast dancing/grooving to Gloria!  Gloria now singing Oh Happy Day with the Choir backing her up.

8:11pmET: What an amazing start to the show!  Everyone is up on their feet!  Gloria Gaynor now takes the stage to sing her famous I Will Survive.  The Choir is grooving with her as backup.

8:06pmET: African stars including Angelique Kidjo , Thandiswa Mazwai and Suzanna Owiyo joining the Choir to sing Give Me Hope Joanna.

8:01pmET: Host Whoopi Goldberg taking the stage.

8:00pmET: And we’re underway!  Opening titles being played….video presentation of Madiba!

7:57pmET: I believe the Choir is taken the stage…they are on the left side of the screen.

7:50pmET: 10 mins to go…inside of Radio City Hall being shown…

7:30pmET: T-minus 30 mins!  Very excited.
