The Soweto Gospel Choir will for the very first time perform at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch.
Their latest show is called African Spirit, because it takes the audience on a wonderful spiritual journey, with a variety of songs that deal with the upliftment and strength of the human spirit, whether expressed through the love of God, the love of our fellow man, the love of coming together as a people or simply the love of life and all the beauty it has to offer us. During the performance, you’ll be hearing spiritual songs – sung with unique African Spirit.
The Soweto Gospel Choir has won two Grammy Awards in the last five years. The programme includes not only traditional and gospel music, with well loved songs such as Tshepa Thapelo, Woza Meli Wami, One Love and Amazing Grace, but also explores other avenues of spiritual awareness found in the more modern songs of our time, not necessarily religious or gospel songs, but songs that speak to the soul. Whether expressing a desire for peace and unity, as in Jimmy Cliff’s One Love, a celebration of spiritual awareness as in the song This Little Light of Mine, the love of another human being as in Bob Dylan’s I’ll Remember You, or a prayer for peace and unity as in World in Union, the human spirit shines through.
The Soweto Gospel Choir has a very busy international touring schedule; this performance is therefore a rare chance to see one of South Africa’s best arts ambassadors in action.
