In a glum world filled with daily bad news, one gets a hefty dose of hope and joy after an evening with the Soweto Gospel Choir. This superb, Grammy-winning, 26-voice ensemble rocks and dances to driving drums, then soulfully caresses with the most sublimely African a capella harmonies–all with a message of peace, love, and acceptance of diversity.
The packed Campbell Hall audience in Santa Barbara swayed, tapped, clapped and shouted for more. Sweet! And hot. Hell…after watching and listening to this bright-eyed group who literally rose from the turmoil and ashes of South African apartheid, maybe there’s a chance we won’t blow up (or burn up) the planet after all.
Buzzine Magazine gives the Soweto Gospel Choir our highest recommendation. Should they come anywhere near your city on this final leg of their US tour, run–don’t walk–to the ticket office (Otherwise, buy their new album, “African Spirit”).
