The Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir is one of the most popular gospel choirs to come out of South Africa. The choir arrived in Fiji for two performances — one in Suva and one in Lautoka.
Formed in 2002, the choir has been performing all over the world to international acclaim; however, they claim their greatest honor was performing for Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa. In 2003, the choir founded its own charitable foundation, Nkosi’s Haven Vukani (to reach out), to help children orphaned by AIDS.
It was the choir’s first time in Fiji, and they felt a little overwhelmed, but when they arrived for a visit at the Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji (FOR), the staff made them feel right at home. They felt so welcomed, they returned later in the week and gave an impromptu concert, which guests and staff members immensely enjoyed.
